Landscapes: Night


Afghanistan is without a doubt one of the darkest places on Earth. See the dark spot on the map below between India and the Middle East.

 Because there are so few cities, and even fewer people in them with electricity, the amount of ambient light in this country is ridiculously low. That can make it dark at night. We are talking Heart of Darkness, Congo River, Spelunking dark. The picture below is of the runway lights at FOB Wolverine, as you can see there is nothing to see behind them, because it is dark.
The weird thing is; because it gets so dark here, when the moon is out it can get bright. Like, close to 7 pm on a Summer day bright outside. So bright that our headlamps really do very little good.
